Wind & Coastal Code Intelligence Now Live in 3 More States – AL, NC and SC

Properties only a few miles apart can be subject to materially different wind and coastal construction requirements. Until now, figuring out which requirements applied to a specific property meant cross-referencing wind maps, coastline boundaries, and jurisdiction-specific code amendments by hand.


OneClick is closing that gap. Following our initial release in Florida and expansion to Texas in July, Impact Zone Designations and Wind Intelligence are now live in Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina, bringing property-level wind and coastal code determinations to three more states on the Atlantic-Gulf Coast.

 

What's new

For every property in these coastal states, OneClick's Code Detail Report now includes:

  • Coastal County (Yes/No)
  • Hurricane-Prone Region (Yes/No), determined by ASCE 7's basic wind speed trigger (≥115 mph for Risk Category II)
  • Windborne Debris Region (Yes/No), determined by basic wind speed threshold and ASCE 7 state-specific debris criteria
  • Distance from Mean High-Water Line (in miles), where applicable
  • Design Wind Speed (mph), sourced from ASCE 7 mapped to the adopted code version

Each determination comes with the associated code enforcement language built directly into the report, so there's no separate lookup required.

A closer look at North Carolina: this state adds an extra layer of complexity worth calling out. North Carolina identifies several types of Ocean Hazard Areas, including Ocean Erodible Areas, Inlet Hazard Areas, and Unvegetated Beach Areas. These are governed by coastal-development standards tied to erosion, flooding, and shoreline movement. The North Carolina Division of Coastal Management uses long-term shoreline-change rates to define these zones and set oceanfront construction setbacks. OneClick now surfaces this designation alongside the standard wind-zone data for North Carolina properties.

Why it matters for carriers

Claims severity is highly sensitive to wind-zone misclassification. Two properties with comparable storm damage, even in the same metro area, can require materially different repair scopes depending on their exact wind-zone status. Local jurisdictions can further complicate this with their own code amendments.

Historically, adjusters have relied on manual wind maps, county-level assumptions, and engineering escalation to sort this out. The risk cuts both ways. A coastal property can be under-scoped, leading to supplements and delays. An inland property can be over-scoped with impact-rated products or engineering review the code doesn't actually require.

With property-specific determinations built into the Code Detail Report, carriers can:

  • Triage faster at First Notice of Loss. Know immediately whether wind-debris protection and hurricane provisions apply.
  • Validate estimates against actual property location rather than county-level assumptions.
  • Prioritize CAT operations by distinguishing coastal, near-coastal, and inland exposure during surge events.
  • Standardize QA across staff adjusters, independent adjusters, and contractors with a single source of truth.

Why it matters for contractors

Wind-related upgrades, opening protection requirements, and coastal exposure assumptions are common flashpoints in estimate disputes. Impact Zone Designations give you property-specific evidence to back up scope decisions, so you can rely on documented determinations rather than generalized wind maps or county-level assumptions that carriers may push back on.

Use the data to:

  • Justify code-required upgrades. Reference explicit windborne debris-region status when supporting impact-rated windows, opening protection, secondary water barriers, or enhanced nailing patterns.
  • Support coastal scope items. Use distance from the mean high-water line and design wind speed to validate uplift and fastening requirements.
  • Reduce back-and-forth with carriers by attaching the Code Details report as evidence of alignment with adopted standards.

Where the data matters most

Three things make the biggest difference in what a project actually needs and costs: how fast the wind design speed is, whether the property sits in a hurricane-prone area, and whether it's in a windborne debris region. These are the details most likely to change from one property to the next, even within the same area.

The building codes themselves (IRC and IBC, which point back to ASCE 7) work the same way across each state. What changes is the specific data for each property, like its exact wind speed or hazard designation, and that's what leads to different requirements from one job to the next.

This data matters most for properties along the Gulf Coast. Wind speeds run highest there, and windborne debris and hurricane-prone designations are most common, so these properties are the ones most likely to need code-triggered upgrades.
